Introduction
Being one of the largest telecommunications companies globally, Huawei was expected to take the top crown from Samsung at the beginning of 2019. However, the company has been under scrutiny for shady business and accused of using its products to spy on other nations. With Huawei being under constant investigations from foreign nations for insecure communications, will it be able to continue to be a leading communication manufacture? The company has been under the spotlight with the ban from The United States and other nations. The United States is concerned that Huawei can use its communication for spying and disrupting communications. In the future, would Huawei be able to expand its company into the largest telecommunications in the world? Will it also be able to sell and distribute its technology with The United States and other countries that have banned the company.
Huawei was founded in 1987 in Shenzhen, China by former army officer Ren Zhengfei. Ren Zhengfei has ties with the Chinese military and Communist Party. The company employs a staggering 180,000 workers and earns an annual sales revenue of 8 billion dollars. Huawei makes its money by manufacturing routers, switches, and other telecommunication equipment. The company has its product in over 170 countries, with over a third of the globe using services (Martin Roll, 2018).

The United States implemented a ban on Huawei which became known as the Huawei ban in May 2019. The US president announced that the company was listed on the Entity List which bans it from doing business with any US organization. Also, the US companies were banned from using Huawei networking equipment. Implemented recently, suppliers who use American technology are unable to sell to Huawei. The ban was not just implemented by the US, the UK also banned Huawei from its 5G infrastructure, and all of Huawei equipment must be removed by 2027 (Keane, 2021). Part of the reason for the ban was Huawei could be able to use their 5G network to spy on populations. Another reason stated Tim Bowler states in his article is that “State-sponsored hackers could use these devices, which often have weaker security features, as back doors into strategically vital networks. For instance, this could make it possible to shut down a rivals’ power stations” (Bowler, 2020). America is concerned that the Chinese company has close ties with the central leadership making it an unacceptable security concern. Consequently, banning the company will reduce its dominance in the 5G technology.
Research Findings
With this ban it affected, Huawei was affected by more than just sales, it was unable to work with companies such as Intel, Qualcomm, Google, and many others. (Brown, 2021). The ban was a part of the trade war with the United States and China. Brown states in his article “The Huawei ban explained: A complete timeline and everything you need to know” that, “The Chinese company has been under fire from the United States government, resulting in what is colloquially referred to as the ‘Huawei ban.’ This ongoing battle has forced Huawei to drastically change its business practices” (Brown, 2021).
The Huawei leaders have pleaded not guilty and claimed their innocence since the beginning and do not plan to jeopardize people’s privacy and maintain security for countries. The company has stated, “We would never compromise or harm any country, organization, or individual, especially when it comes to cyber-security and user privacy protection” (Bowler, 2020). The UK set up the Huawei Cyber Security Evaluation Centre to keep tabs on the company to make sure they are not using their equipment to spy on people. The cybersecurity team stated in march of 2019 that they were unable to find evidence that the company was having malicious Chinese state activity (Bowler, 2020). The company faces scrutiny from several nations that rely on it for the networking infrastructure. The company had minor wins since 2019 May but the ban effect is heavy.
Proposed Solutions
The company has been forced to revamp how it manufactures and sell its smartphones since the company is unable to work with the US and other countries. The company will be building its chipset factory in Shanghai, China (Tech, 2020). Huawei also has a large supply of raw materials that will help them survive the US ban for the next 1 to 2 years. Now that the business will not be able to use androids OS, it will be creating an alternate OS for its phones called HarmonyOS. Huawei will also be making alternate platforms for services like YouTube Gmail, Google Maps, and other google sources since they are not allowed to use their products (Hall, 2021). On the other hand, western companies such as; Microsoft, Google, and Apple will not be able to use Huawei software and hardware for their companies also due to the ban from the US. Huawei will have to look for new strategies to navigate through the ban effects until further notice
Conclusion
Huawei will have a hard time getting into western countries despite it being one of the biggest communication companies in the world. The company will have to continue to show that it is a safe and secure company that will not violate anyone’s privacy. In the future, Huawei might be able to mend relations with western companies and both sides will be able to learn from each other. However, it does not look like the ban will be let up anytime soon with tensions rising with China and The United States. As such, Huawei will have to develop new strategies, and methods of manufacturing and selling their products during this harsh time.
