“The Tell-Tale Heart” and “Yellow Wallpaper”: Comparing the Main Characters
One of the main characters in The Tell-Tale Heart is the old man. The narrator gives his full description as one with clouded pale, blue eyes (Schlauraff 2017). There is no clear illustration between the old man and the narrator but the narrator says they are in love with the old him. The most suggestive attributes of the old man are a heart that beats constantly and an eye that will not close. This is an indicator of a dogged attachment to life; this can be used to identify the old man as a victim of archetypal murder thus he is characterized as a murder resister.
In the other book, Yellow Wallpaper, one of the identified main characters is known as John who is the husband of the unmanned narrator. He is a physician who does his work with full passion (Romlah et al 2019). He ultimately makes all the decisions for the wife even though he claims that he allows the wife to make her own decisions. He is so much concerned with the narrator and the tendencies of authority stifle her. His character symbolizes the patriarchal society of those times.
In the Tell-Tale Heart story, they were afraid of the strange eyes of the old man and it is for this reason that the narrator watches as the old man awakens during one night revealing his eye. The old man is stroked and smothered with his mattresses by the narrator. His body is then cut into pieces and the pieces are hidden under the floorboard. In the story of the Yellow Wallpaper, John infantilizes his wife and he practices ultimate authority over her. He asserts his commands stating that he knows what is best since he is a doctor. He uses logic to undermine the wishes and the imaginings of his wife. His whole character can be illustrated as evil but one which can make the reader sympathize with him because of the constant tenderness he shows to his ailing wife.
When the old man in the Tell-Tale Heart dies, the narrator starts to hear some noises whereby the narrator starts imagining that maybe they are the heartbeats coming from the hidden body pieces of the old man. The narrator gets so overwhelmed by the voices to an extent that the narrator confesses he killed the old man and asks the police to tear the floorboards and pick the body pieces of the old man. This is an indicator that even though the old man’s body had died, his spirit had not rested and it was haunting the narrator.
Towards the end of the Yellow Wallpaper, John faints in surprise and goes without his wife’s consent who calls him “that man” and she complains about having to “creep over him” as she goes along the wall. Since John had only known his wife superficially and could only figure out her outer pattern and not the struggling inside woman, his ignorance is no mere unconvincing villain. The unequal relationship they have prevents him from knowing the real her as well as her problems. The story’s chilling finale indicates that John had been damaged by the imprisoning relationship.
In conclusion, the old man had done nothing to warrant his murder. It can also be argued that must have been aware of the narrator’s violent tendencies since he cried in dismay before even the narrator kills him. John on the other hand is manipulative and only comes to understand the cost of his ignorance late after she finds her woman trapped in the wallpaper.
