The challenges of health equity in low-income countries

Reply 1

I agree. Social determinants of health include social and physical factors in one’s environment. The environment includes where one is born, raised, live, and work. In addition to the social determinants indicated are employment, socio-economic standards, and social support network (Heiman & Artiga, 2015). An example is children born to illiterate parents. They are highly likely to live in a place that poses barriers to health, including exposed garbage, substandard houses, and lack of safety. An unemployed person is exposed to health problems as they cannot afford to live in clean areas or access sidewalks and parks. A parent with mental disorders is unable to raise their children well emotionally and financially.

Different people and institutions have a role to play in managing these social determinants. Nurses are vital in breaking the chain of infection considering social determinants of health. Nurses start by considering factors that impact a patient’s current health status and support, then enhancing and maintaining health wellness. Their primary role is to boost health literacy to enable people to access, process, comprehend and communicate essential health services and information for better decision making (Barton et al., 2018). For instance, illiterate patients may not know that the environment they live in affects their health, such as respiratory problems for those who live in polluted areas. The nurses can educate society about how their environment and lifestyle impact their health. However, what people are taught needs them to have resources to be effective.

I agree social determinants of health are all factors around where people spend their lives. The basic fact is that people from low-income factors have worse health outcomes because they do not have access to quality education, limited job opportunities, and poor living conditions. For example, in low-income areas, they only have access to cheap liquor, which damages their health and their children are likely to take it as well. Only when social determinants of health are addressed will more significant and sustainable returns be attained, improving global health (Heiman & Artiga, 2015).

Breaking the chain of infection indeed goes beyond educating people. Low-income communities must be empowered materially, politically, and psychosocially. People in these areas may be educated on maintaining hygiene, but the chain will not be broken until they are provided with basic needs such as water. Responsible institutions must seek to attain fairer distribution of resources and power. These people need to be given employment opportunities to cater to their basic needs and access medical care like citizens in higher-income areas. Studies show that low-income countries use health services more than high-income countries (Orach & Garimoi, 2009). However, governments continually add medical resources and staff in high-income areas than the low-income countries, most of which remain underutilized, creating more inequalities. Most infection chains will be broken by empowering all citizens.
