Synthesis of Personal Strengths and Weaknesses as a Leader Paper
When it comes to leadership, particularly in the health care environment, there is a strong need for it. It is thus important for nurses to make an effort to remember the roles they have with other patients. This especially includes acknowledging their individual contributions when a good result is expected. Therefore, it can be said that the essence of leadership can be said to be very multifaceted and complex (Northouse, 2018). I used Northouse’s Conceptualizing Leadership questionnaire to conduct the following leadership review, which will aid me in better understanding leadership and, in particular, my position as a nurse leader. Based on the analysis, I was able to score 16 on trait emphasis, 21 on ability emphasis, 20 on skill emphasis, 15 on behavior analysis, eight on relationship analysis, and 13 on process emphasis. In detail, the leadership dimensions have been discussed as follows;
The Conceptualizing leadership questionnaire by Northouse comprises of the Trait emphasis, ability emphasis, skills emphasis, behavior emphasis, relationship emphasis, and the process emphasis (Tonsberg & Henderson, 2016). When looking at that ability, emphasis will look at the way people can be nurtured using their natural capacity to become very influential leaders, and they are going to gain from such abilities through practice and dedication (Northouse, 2018). In most cases, such leadership abilities will come from the individual and will be realized from the time that they are growing up, including when they are interacting with other peers as young as during the first-grade years. Based on the six dimensions, I was able to find that the one which I could identify with was the relationship trait. In the same manner, I was also able to find that I often view leadership as a relationship, process, skill, behavior, and ability as being almost equal.
In this way, my results thus indicated that relationship and ability are the highest of my scores while my lowest score was trait. This is because, based on the results, it is evident that I do not view leadership as being a trait, meaning I do not think that people were born leaders simply because a person can be a leader when they choose to me (Tonsberg & Henderson, 2016). For example, there are various good leaders that possess good communication skills and are also very good when it comes to public speaking. They could be originally viewed as shy people, and they hard to put more effort into improving their communication skills to reach where they are (Northouse, 2018). This also included practicing the art of public speaking, which in the end made them become the good leaders they are today. In this regard, I can say that leadership calls for one to get to know their followers and be in a position of understanding them better, so they can lead them.
Analysis and synthesis
Based on my analysis, I found that I prefer to view leadership in terms of developing relationships. From this view, leadership is often centered towards toe communication between myself and the other staff instead of the unique qualities that people are supposed to have as leaders (Tonsberg & Henderson, 2016). Though of as a relationship, it means that leadership should be a process of establishing collaboration which comes in among follower and leaders. Leaders will impact and will be impacted by their followers. Here both the leader and the followers are going to be affected in turn by the situation which they will both be facing (Northouse, 2018). This approach thus puts more emphasis on the idea that as a leader, this is not going to be a linear one-way event but will have to be interactive in most of the events.
When it comes to traditional leadership, the authority will be viewed from the top-down, wherein the interactive approach, authority, and influence are supposed to be shared. When leadership is well defined, in this regard, it is going to be available to everyone. This is not restricted to the formally designate leader within the group (Tonsberg & Henderson, 2016). Based on the fact that I have always thought of leadership as a relationship, it means that as a leader, I am supposed to include my followers and their interests in the whole process of leadership. This means that I must be aware of my followers and their interests, positions, ideas, attitudes, and motivation. Also, this approach comes with some ethical overtone since it puts more emphasis on the need for me as a leader to work with other staff if I am to achieve their mutual purpose (Northouse, 2018). The issue of mutual stressing will also mean that leaders are going to act toward the follower in manners that are forced or manners that are not ethical. It also increases the possibility which leaders and followers in manners that are unethical or forced. This will also increase the possibility which followers and leaders are going to work toward a common good.
My lowest score was on the ability trait, which looked at the fact that one can have the ability to adjust to different environments and succeed as a leader. As a nursing profession, one has to be flexible to adopt different situation and patient environment that one I had before. In addition to the trait as the second-lowest score, I feel that leadership is should not really entirely be viewed as an ability. However, it is true that a person who has leadership ability can become a good leader since he is seen as having the capacity to lead. As much as the term ability is often viewed as the natural capacity, the ability can also be acquired through training and experience. I have, for example, often viewed myself as being very good at public speaking, as well as having the natural physical ability to excel in some sport (Northouse, 2018). However, I am very poor when it comes to being assertive, and often I will seek the opinion of others before making a decision. For some, this might seem like a weakness, but this is also an ability to consult and listen to others before making a decision. Leadership ability can also be seen through hard work, practice, and reason.
Based on Northouse’s conceptualizing leadership concepts analysis, I can say that I have come to understand leadership from the perspective of an individual and those around him or her. I cannot say that leadership is only about being on top of other staff, holding high office in the hospital, or being given the power to make decisions, but that leadership is about guiding people towards a similar objective (Northouse, 2018). I have also come to understand that all the leadership traits are important and can work together interchangeably depending on the situation. It is also important that I learn to work on my communication skills and behavior and process implementation. This is because it is difficult to be a functioning leader when some of these important qualities have not been met.
In summary, the leadership synthesis questionnaire is very important in helping the nursing leader identify their individual strengths and weaknesses as a leader. Through the questionnaire, I have also come to learn of my abilities and area that I am going to work on to ensure leadership is improved (Tonsberg & Henderson, 2016). Also, it is important to note that approaches to leadership will keep on evolving, changing focus and direction, and will call upon one to keep on developing their skills and knowledge to function positively as a leader.
