This study will provide an overview of the Center for World Music obtained from The Regional Music of Mexico, featuring Hermanos Herrera with Ethnomusicologist Tim Rice. Hermanos Herrera is a musical team that is made up of five brothers and one sister. The musicians play different traditional Mexican music styles, including the son jarocho, son huasteco, and El Colas (Center for World Music, 2020). The musical group performs their music genre using an energetic and aggressive style that is exhilarating and passionate. Hermanos Herrera has a vision of improving the future for Mexican music by embracing the traditional styles and incorporating them into the modern style of music.
The brothers and their sister were raised in California, but their parents taught them their family culture. Hermanos Herrera has played a series of songs at the Center for World Music. The music by Hermanor Herrera, which fascinated me, is known as son jarocho, which they are playing in front of an audience. The song piece has a soothing smooth tone that is pleasing to listen to. The instruments that the musicians are using include the guitar, violin, and harp. These instruments have created a synchronized tone that provides rhythm to the music piece, and this is why every person applauds once the music ends (Center for World Music, 2021). The artists have explained that jarocho is a name given to people living in that particular area in Mexico called Veracruz and son means to make a sound. These sounds have been obtained from various musical genres in Mexico that were developed in the 1600s. When you listen to the music, it seems to have a lot of history, especially from the instruments and sounds used. The song uses a solo artist who sings his line, and the rest join him with an interesting rhythmic response while using their musical instruments. The history of son jarocho was influenced by the Spanish people who went to Mexico in the 1590s. The Mexican songs obtained a mix of Spanish and European influence and the indigenous people of Mexico. Sounds from Western Africa influence the rhythms as the indigenous Mexicans interacted with the slaves from Africa.
The second song that I found fascinating is El Colas, played by Hermenos Herrera, using guitars, violins, and a harp. El Colas has a different rhythmic style compared to son jarocho because it uses a fast-paced rhythm. The sounds played by the instruments are fast and continuous. They are played for a while at the beginning of the song (Center for World Music, 2021). After some time, the solo artist sings his part and the rest respond by joining with a fast rhythmic tone as a response to the solo artist. The music is more enjoyable, fun and the team plays their musical instruments very fast without stopping. A point reaches when the musicians stop singing and only play the instruments.
Another point is where they all stop playing the instruments, and only the harp player and one guitar player synchronize in harmony and produce melodious musical tones. After some time, the rest join, and they continue to play the musical instruments while singing the last part of the musical piece. According to the artists, the song El Colas is about a man called Don Nicholas who was wealthy but after some time became poor and was named Colas Nomas.
