Self -Assessment on Writing
INTRODUCTION
Good writing is vital for communicating personal thoughts and ideas. Therefore, good academic writing has often proved to be challenging to many students, myself included. Academically, good writing skills help me achieve better grades, and I have resiliently struggled to improve my writing skills for the same reason. I have become a better writer with good narrative skills through consistent research for improvement. Besides researching how to improve my writing skills, I have enrolled in an ENG 101course to augment my writing abilities. It might be strenuous to assess my writing, but it feels beyond satisfying to narrate and review for you how I become a better writer. I will focus on my resilience as a once-poor writer to a now-good writer by discussing my teachers‘ role in shaping me to be a good writer and the personal efforts of research and consistent practice to become one.
BODY PARAGRAPHS
My first step in improving my writing skills was to construct a positive teacher-student relationship with my teachers, who were not only willing to correct my grammar but played a central role in sharpening my writing skills. Darling-Hammond et al. assert that teachers unfold students’ inherent knowledge by introducing them to new concepts and leading them through successful mastery of those concepts (97). The teachers give the students total and are listened to in a free and fair environment. Talking and listening before writing gives the student a chance to view their ideas in greater perspective. The teachers tell us that we need to hear about the district and state standards because they form the basis for the writing program. They must also prepare ways to change intentions to offer help for students performing at various ability levels and base writing strategies on student preferences as decided by tests. Teachers encourage students to write every day in a safe and encouraging atmosphere. Teachers express their appreciation for students’ writing by sharing it and providing constructive reviews. To ensure success, teachers have adequate scaffolding. Students draw on their essays to discuss them with a classmate. I believed that my best chance to become a good writer was through the help of my tutors. Overcoming the hurdle of my inadequate skills in writing has not always been an easy journey. I am a passionate researcher and writer of academic papers. However, English is not my first language, and I can only write what I have read. According to studies, Teachers take advantage of the chance to link reading and writing. Teachers encourage students to become more conscious of the social meaning of writing. They allow students to express their sources of motivation. Teachers assist students in developing patterns of thought about learning that will serve them well while they grow their writing skills. As teachers hand out did-it-dots, they are simultaneously coaching, evaluating, consulting, and preparing. Excellence in writing teaching, as excellence in writing, requires time and practice. My instructors at the writing center gave me low grades but were always willing to guide me through all my grammar mistakes and pointing out what I needed to correct.
Another thing that has made me a good writer is accepting correction through criticism and personal efforts in research. The comments I got on my low-graded papers were disheartening, and unless I changed, my writing ambition was in crisis. I had to critically analyze my written works, consult my fellow students who had more vital writing skills, and reach out to my teachers for extra assistance. According to The Subjective Narrative, a good writer reads widely and does not dismiss any detail, whether minor or significant (para. 12). In pursuit of polishing my English, writing, and speech, I dived into more research to understand more about grammar and spelling. According to Stephen King on subjective paper, one has to put more effort and practice into grammar. Being an English speaker or not, you must pay special attention to grammar. Grammar may be tedious, but it has a certain allure. It’s much easier to fix grammatical structures than it is to improve the shape. The goal isn’t to be perfect; it would put so much pressure on the team. As an ambitious writer, strive to be stronger, and you can see your skills grow over time. I was determined to polish my writing skills, and I could only do this by reading deep and wide. I have since then become a dedicated reader. I read extensively, and I do not limit myself to specific readings. You can read anything so you can tell the difference between excellent and poor prose. Reading allows you to experiment with various styles and discover your speech. As Stephen King points out, many published authors do a poor job compared to aspiring authors. You don’t have the tools to write if you don’t have time to read. It’s as easy as that. Doing research has expounded my view and ideas about writing and given me insights on what I should go for. Through research, I have bought a vast collection of novels and articles from which I read and generate my writing ideas. The readings also help me improve my spelling and grammar because whenever I come across new words, I look up their meanings from my advanced learner’s dictionary, which has become my special companion.
Finally, I have learned how to effectively and successfully construct and organize my academic papers through consistency. I have been doing a lot of practice that I forward to my teachers to evaluate and take their assessment. An excellent academic article should have a captivating introduction, a well-organized and thoughtful body, and a summary that shows a connection between the different parts of the paper (The Subjective Narrative para. 22). Writing articles and essays more often has helped me improve my grammar and avoid redundancy. According to Stephen King, writing two thousand words a day will significantly impact if you are passionate about registering or being an author. This can be done explicitly by avoiding distractions when writing. Stephen King has a composing policy with the door closed and editing with the doors wide open when it comes to editing. This way, you won’t be tempted to ask family or friends for feedback on your fiction. There is no burden if there is no opinion to be offered. You’re also less likely to slack off or start focusing on the wrong subject, such as how great everything is, rather than telling the goddam tale. As a result of the reputation I offer my reports, they will defend themselves. My papers’ material is based on evidence rather than my view. I no longer compare my writing ability to my peers because I am confident in my abilities. I assume that the content of the papers I write is just as critical as the audience for which they are registered. I’ve improved my writing skills by reading a lot of books and journals. I don’t write to fill pages, and I’ve practiced multiple writing methods in many books, but I’ve made significant progress.
CONCLUSION
In the future, I want to be a good writer and be in a position to share my skills with the rest of the writers and my journey to being excellent. To do so, I will be consistent with my works, expect corrections from my peers and lecturers, and understand that the first draft is almost always wrong. Allowing somebody else to review your writing can be daunting for some authors, particularly when starting. Still, you must develop positive habits early on and learn to take constructive feedback. Remember that authors are needy people who need to be continually told that they are the artistic geniuses they think they are, so if you’re serious about your writing, you’ll need to grow a thick skin. A good editor is indispensable in this regard.
