I will focus on my resilience as a once-poor writer to a now-good writer by discussing my teachers‘ role in shaping me to be a good writer and the personal efforts of research and consistent practice to become one.
My first step in improving my writing skills was to construct a positive teacher-student relationship with my teachers, who were not only willing to correct my grammar but played a central role in sharpening my writing skills. Darling-Hammond et al. assert that teachers unfold students’ inherent knowledge by introducing them to new concepts and leading them through successful mastery of those concepts (97). The teachers give the students total and are listened to in a free and fair environment. Talking and listening before writing gives the student a chance to view their ideas in greater perspective. The teachers tell us that we need to hear about the district and state standards because they form the basis for the writing program. They must also prepare ways to change intentions to offer help for students performing at various ability levels and base writing strategies on student preferences as decided by tests. Teachers encourage students to write every day in a safe and encouraging atmosphere. Teachers express their appreciation for students’ writing by sharing it and providing constructive reviews. To ensure success, teachers have adequate scaffolding. Students draw on their essays to discuss them with a classmate. I believed that my best chance to become a good writer was through the help of my tutors. Overcoming the hurdle of my inadequate skills in writing has not always been an easy journey. I am a passionate researcher and writer of academic papers. However, English is not my first language, and I can only write what I have read. The comments I got on my low-graded papers were disheartening, and unless I changed, my writing ambition was in crisis. I had to critically analyze my written works, consult my fellow students who had more vital writing skills, and reach out to my teachers for extra assistance. An excellent academic article should have a captivating introduction, a well-organized and thoughtful body, and a summary that shows a connection between the different parts of the paper (The Subjective Narrative para. 22). I don’t write to fill pages, and I’ve practiced multiple writing methods in many books, but I’ve made significant progress.
In the future, I want to be a good writer and be in a position to share my skills with the rest of the writers and my journey to being excellent. To do so, I will be consistent with my works, expect corrections from my peers and lecturers, and understand that the first draft is almost always wrong. Allowing somebody else to review your writing can be daunting for some authors, particularly when starting. Still, you must develop positive habits early on and learn to take constructive feedback. Remember that authors are needy people who need to be continually told that they are the artistic geniuses they think they are, so if you’re serious about your writing, you’ll need to grow a thick skin.
