Sexual Assault on College Campuses
For many women on college and university campuses across America, the simple prospect of walking alone at night from the library to the dormitory is a walk of dread for many college students all across the country on campuses all around us, that is a common fear. Women ages 18-24 are at an elevated risk of sexual violence. According to the statistics on rainn.org, 13% of students, both undergraduate and graduate, will experience rape or sexual assault through physical force, violence, or incapacitation. This is a rising issue that happens more often than one would think. It is time to propose a solution. Sexual assault can also be more likely to occur during their first few months of college’s first and second semesters. Another issue is that only 20% of females on college campuses report the abuse to law enforcement (“Campus Sexual Violence: Statistics”). The research will find solutions on how to stop reduce sexual assault on college campuses.
Suppose American universities seek to promote the health and welfare of the entire campus community, especially its young women. In that case, they must adopt public policies of listing victims of sexual assault, record the perpetrators, enforce more severe and prolonged-lasting punishments, and create safe spaces for women to learn how to live safely on campuses. If we implemented those things onto our college campuses and bring light to what is happening, we can hope that college students’ rates would go down. Also, with the implementation of listing the perpetrators, it may plow the way for more survivors to come forward and report what happened to them. For many, it is the fear of retaliation, not knowing what makes it assault, and the fear of being treated poorly by law enforcement. The incidence of sexual assault is on the rise. The most perilous time for victims of sexual assault occurs in the first and second semester of one’s first year.
The college campus should introduce programs that teach against sexual assault. Sexual assault may be in the form of rape, sexual harassment, and any other condition that a person touches you without your concern. Many people do not understand the effects of sexual harassment, they’re new, or some are influenced by how they were raised, so they think what they are doing is the right thing. They believe by harassing their fellow students, they will earn some sought of prestige. So if the campuses can introduce programs to teach people against sexual assault, it will reduce the rate at which it takes place (Katz, 1054). Many people will be educated on what a person undergoes when they are sexually harassed. Some people think that sexual harassment only takes place with the girls and harassing the boys is fun. Some people are not used to being sexually harassed, if the girls are also taught that they are not the only people being harassed them it will be for the benefit of the school society. It has been witnessed that schools that teach people the adverse effects of sexual assault have reduced sexual assault cases in their schools. The importance o the programs is that they can also teach the offenders the consequences of assaulting others, they may think they are young for the government to take action on them. They will be taught about the constitutions’ rights and what a person will be charged for if they are found guilty of sexually assaulting others. People will fear being accused of such cases, so they will tend to stop that action as fast as possible, they will learn the country’s constitution and go to jail for such immorality. So programs held by the college campus help find a solution to solve issues related to sexual assaults.
On campuses, to prevent sexual assault, there is a need to increase security for female students. First, it can be done through people walking in escorts, in a crowd not to get raped or assaulted if they are alone. They need to be encouraged that walking alone is not safe for them. When they are a number of students walking on the campus, it is difficult for the harasser to take the action of assaulting them because they can protect themselves. The school should also offer tight security (Karjane). Tight security means they need to increase the number of guards on the look for the security of the whole campus. Guards should be situated in all positions that this action takes place, in secluded places and dark areas. By so doing, the offenders will not get a chance of assaulting their fellow students because they are at risk of being found. Sexual assault on American college campuses has become common, and many people, due to sexual violence, are killed by their counterparts. By increasing security, they will be readily available if such incidents try to occur. Through today’s technology, it’s hard to find students not having phones, they will always walk with their phones any place they go. So the phone usually has apps that can be used to track their location. A friend of the person will see every move that you take during the night and the destination you need to have. Their friend will know the place they need to be at a particular time. So if they are not there, the friend has the authority to call the officers and fin the girl. This is faster than calling 911 for assistance because it will take a longer duration for them to arrive. So, by using escorts, increasing the number of security officers and the new technology will help reduce the rate at which sexual assault occurs.
Many students, when they join campus, they are influenced by their peers to take drugs. They later became addicts to medications that may influence them to do evil acts such as drug trafficking. If they take drugs, they will be sexually assaulted there fellows students without their knowledge. Drugs are very harmful in that they destroy the mentality of a person. They will see the need to sexually assaulting others, the use of drugs on the campus is one way in which it increases the rate at which the sexual assault occurs (Lott, 296). It is there recommended that teaching against the use of drugs on campuses will help reduce the rate at which sexual assault occurs. Guidance and counseling should be highly considered so that the people who use drugs may be enlightened and may stop using drugs. During the first years of campus life, all the students need to be oriented to know how campus life is, the risk that they will face if they are not safe at all. They need to be sure that their safety is first considered. In the first days of campus, they need to be told that peer pressure is common in the college, and if at all they will not have self-control, then the possibility of them participating in these acts is high. Students should be taught the effects of drugs and advice not to use them. So campaigning against the use of drugs is a proposal that can be used as a solution against sexual assault.
Students on the campus should use the safety measure tips to control themselves against sexual assault. They need to use the tips of partying, like when they go to parties they should walk with friends, not leave their drink even if they’re going to the restrooms, do not accept drinks from anyone and always keep your phone charged. If the student follows these tips while going to parties, they will be able to prevent the risk of them being sexually assaulted. Because they will be sober, they have friends to take care of them if such events try to happen (Schwartz, 623). Students themselves should have certain strategies that they can use to stop sexual assault. These strategies include controlling behavior such as; containing people who try to state their physical limits, other strategies include, be clear in your statement, if it no, it’s a no and if yes, then it’s a yes, so these people will be able to control their behavior (Rosoff, 91). Students should also avoid areas that are secluded or dark places because such places are usually prone to high risk of sexual assault, and people will not be able to reach the victim faster. Such precautions and strategies will help the student not to be assaulted on campus, it is one of the best ways to avoid the risk of being sexually assaulted.
Methods used.
Some methods were used to develop these strategies that need to be implemented in the school methods, such as surveys, experiments, and data analysis.
Some campuses in English were visited and survey on how they reduced the rate at which sexual assault can be minimized. Most of the students were taught the usage of drugs and strategies they could have used to find a solution to sexual abuse. The survey was successful and that is why it can be tried on campuses in America.
Some of these solutions were experimented on in the college campuses in America and they became successful that is why trying out these solutions will be efficient for the college campus. If it worked in the college in America, then it would possibly work in almost all the campuses found there.
Data analysis was collected on campuses in America. It was found that 90% of the campuses suffer from sexual assault, especially those who suffer without their knowledge and when they realize it’s too late. The students who their fellow students harass are disturbed psychologically, so the data was collected. After implementing the solution, in few campuses then the rate of college campus sexual assault was reduced, that is why most of it needs to be used in the American college campus.
Results
After surveying, experimenting, and collecting data, it came to notice that most American campus students suffer from sexual assault and it became an issue that needed to be solved because many students who were being assaulted suffered psychologically, others suffered from sexual violence, which led to the death of the students. So the campuses, in conjunction with the government, needed to come up with ways that they could curb sexual assault on the campuses. The measure that was put in place reduces almost 70% of the campus sexual assault. The measure should be taken seriously and put on all campuses in America.
In conclusion, sexual assault is a vice that affects many people, both ladies, and men. It takes place mainly in colleges, especially those who have currently joined campus because they do not know what is taking place. They are not well conversant with how campus life is and they tend not to know if people there are immoral. Therefore all students should have programs that teach them against sexual assault and showing them how wrong that behavior is. Campus students should follow all the strategies that will keep them safe. The government should also curb sexual assault by arresting or putting those who have made a mistake in custody. They need to face charges so they may fear to continue with the same action. The campus should also put the name of the perpetrators who have sexually assaulted others on billboards. This will make them feel ashamed and lower their self-esteem, and many people will not want their names written over there, so they will not continue with the act. Therefore sexual assault is an immoral behavior that needs to be stopped.
