Psych in Media: Stigmatization of Autistic People
Many people living with psychological disorders experience stigma from the media, which negatively affects their lives. The girl is presented as helpless, recluse, and mute. Examples of other films that have stigmatized autism are “The Temple Grandin 2010 and “Please Stand By 2017.” These are just a few examples of how the media has presented people suffering from autism. While most journalists, artists, television producers, and filmmakers do not purposely destroy the image of those suffering from autism, it unfortunately happens.
There exist multiple misconceptions among people suffering from autism. For example, the media presents such people as helpless, wild, strange, and with all sorts of quirky personalities. But is this true? Does autism cause people to have wild personalities? However, although the media is argued to contribute to the spreading of the stereotypes about autistic people, it also plays a critical role in educating the members of society on living with autistic people.
