Abstract
Since early 2020, the world has witnessed significant changes in the job market. Before the pandemic, only a small percentage of companies had adapted the work from home model. Now, most are increasingly appreciating the advantages of working remotely as it cuts down office running costs as well as curbing the spread of Covid- 19 virus. For some, this came as an unexpected saving resort following the closure of all public offices by the government directives. Leading by example, Twitter, which is based in San Francisco, in May 2020 indefinitely advised their employees to work from home. Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO also gave directives for employees to work from home even as offices open. This report will focus on this interesting trend in the job market. We seek to understand the advantages, benefits, challenges and the future of office spaces.

BACKGROUND
Introduction
Work from home is whereby an employee does his/ her work from home instead of going to the office. It is flexible and helps the employee strike a balance between career and personal life as well as delivering work with ease. This modern approach is facilitated by internet without regarding the physical location of the employee. This work from home is also used by companies whose employees are situated remotely, not necessarily home. This trend has become popular during the wake of covid -19 though some companies have been using it for a longer time.
Through ever-advancing technologies such as zoom, skype, slack, face time, google hangouts and cloud computing as well as emails and social media platform one does not have to be in the office all the time to deliver as many tasks can be done even in a home office.one only requires a fast internet connection and a functioning computer. This way, companies can increase employee productivity, cut down turnover and organizational overall costs.
Long commuting hours and traffic jams takes up a lot of time as employees get to the offices. Sometimes natural or man-made disasters can disrupt how activities are done, prompting closure of offices, which means with even under such circumstances, a reasonable percentage of employees can ensure operations keep running until normalcy resumes.
How to work from home
It is important to identify the rules as each company has its set of rules and regulations. Some organizations do not allow the use of public Wi-Fi. Identify the work schedule and run trials before to predict any errors that might occur and impede your session. Equally, ask for logins, passcodes, and security pins, instructions even for those requiring two-factor authentication. Of most important is to enquire for the tech tool that will be needed and equip with the same.
Get a private, quiet room and prepare a makeshift office, which is comfortable and formal. Try as much as possible to separate it from personal space and make sure the internet connection is strong and fast. Increase the bandwidth by moving closer to the router or use Ethernet. If the job involves making long international calls, you can use phone app such as hangouts and WhatsApp, whose rates are much cheaper and effective.
Minimize distractions as much as possible to allow for concentration by using noise-cancelling devices. In cases where the employee has an infant, make arrangements with the caretaker to take care of the child.
Plan for breaks in between work intervals to allow for social interactions and meal breaks. In as much the employee is working from home their general social being is important. Take breaks for short walks and naps to ease the brain load and refresh your body. A healthy body is guarantee for maximum productivity.
Twitter lets some employees work from home
The decision to enable employees to work remotely first came as a measure to curb the spread of coronavirus but seems to be embraced even after the health crisis. Twitter allows their employees to work from home if they want to. At first, it was a surviving tactic for the business but seems to be doing better each day.
The company closed all the offices and cancelled all business travels as well as its internal events. In a statement to CNN Business, the company’s vice president of people said that employees could continue working from home as long as they wanted with better results as they would in the offices.
The company continues to enjoy the benefits that come with working remotely even as the health crisis in most parts of the world has reduced and normalcy returned. In an email to their employees by CEO Jack Dorsey, the companies promised to provide a warm and secure environment once they were ready to go back to the office.
Because of the economic regression in most companies, twitter has reduced hiring and only does so in critical departments such as engineering, trust and safety division. This has been in an effort to cut down total expenses. The company adopted different strategies in order to avoid laying off some workers, especially in the wake of the pandemic.
Advantages of working from home
Flexibility in job applicants as disabled or even parents restrained at home with kids can apply. Physical distance can no longer prevent one from applying for a job as they can work from anywhere.
There is more savings in organizational running costs in terms of infrastructure and utility bills such as electricity and rents.
Employees are more motivated as they get to spend time with their loved ones, which increases productivity. Also, taking breaks for food and naps keeps them refreshed and healthy hence happy and ready to give more.
Saves time spent in traffic and crowds, which reduce interpersonal conflicts between employees. Also no distractions from collogue in the office.
Working from home allows employee to customize their working area according to their taste and preference, which creates more comfort and friendliness.
Flexible schedule that allows breaks as an employee wishes, which means they can eat any of the day and no rush to hang up a call.
Employees get to wear cozy clothes as they are just within the house. They also save on food costs as eating in town is expensive than making food at home.
Facebook work from home approach
Based on instructions from the health department and government, the company allowed its employees to work from home voluntarily in order to curb the covid-19 disease. The company’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg also said that 50% of its employees could continue working from home even in the future. This will help get the maximum output from the employee as well as lift economy.
The company also seeks to hire and work with people from diverse cultures eliminating physical distance and inaccessibility. No one deserves to be locked out of an opportunity because they cannot move to a new place.
Facebooks continues to reopen offices in those regions cleared by the government and where the virus has been mitigated in more than eight weeks. However, employees working remotely home will continue as long as it takes..
Google has continued working from home with plans to continue even post-covid 19 pandemic. Through a research, google gave some suggestions, which focuses with the employee wellbeing, productivity, performance and accessibility. By making emotional intelligence the basis of the work from home management strategy, the employees can control their emotions instead of being controlled by emotions.
Challenges to working from home
Managing time
This can be a challenge because of poor management skills that comes with ‘freedom’ Employee procrastinate and end up late delivering their work. Regular day structure acts as a tool and helps employees plan their time if there are in the offices which working from home lacks.
Too Comfortable
Often working from home blurs the line between career and personal life, as employees are always relaxing and laying around in comfortable incliner chairs with less urgency to meet targets.
A lot of distractions
It is hard maintaining the formality of an office in the house as family and friends keep knocking on the door. It is also difficult to miss your favorite show on the TV to complete a task. Retarded social life
Human beings are social beings, and zoom or skype meeting can never replace physical interactions that take place in the offices.
Poor supervision
Bosses give direction and help make crucial decisions in the work place, which an individual at home lacks as guidance.
Despite the benefits of working from home, every advantage brings about a challenge, which requires effort. In as many employees are ‘free’, they need to create a routine and time structure and follow it as if in a real office set up. Companies need to invest in online resources and training in order to bring offices at home.
The future of work from home policy
It is interesting to see the new trend of work from home take up the future of work. Although the pandemic came with a lot of pain and confusion, it has brought about changes in almost every sector in how things are done. Most businesses as a way of surviving the effects of the pandemic started the work from home policy, as necessity is the mother of invention. For those that had introduced the policy earlier, things only got better. ThereThis is a positive change which can be retained even after the pandemic.
Pre-pandemic, about 9% of employees were operating remotely, according to a survey done by Texas for business associates. With the number, increasing up to 35% in the latest survey. According to the respondents, they expect to work from home even after the pandemic.
According to Katherine Guyot, and Isabel V. Sawhill, covid-19 has been a huge experiment in telecommuting. Working from home improves employee productivity, as it is flexible and can be adjusted as the employee wishes.
Working from home also reduces pollution from vehicles as commuters go to the offices. It also improves work and personal life balance as employees spend more time with their loved ones.
Some employers have invested to help employees work from home by buying computers and installing internet connections in their homesteads. The national and states government has been assisting businesses with finances to help them transition easily in to the remote work technology. To create cheer and social interactions even as most countries are in quarantine, employers have started virtual happy hours and coffee breaks where employees chat and interact.
Without a doubt work from home is an amazing trend in the job market with its numerous benefits from cutting down organizational costs, reduction of congestion in the offices and less pollution from commuters. It has also improved flexibility in working schedule where employees work more hours voluntarily. Most importantly, it has helped curb the spread of COVID- 19 while still getting thing done for businesses.
