The survey provided a platform for me to interact with people and collect data based on the topic under study. Still, it also helped me learn how different people perceive different social issues and assign importance to various points depending on how they feel about them. The case of texting while driving provides different perspectives from diverse survey populations. The bottom line, though, is that we can hardly perform simultaneous tasks and execute them flawlessly. Some may say they are addicted to texting which I find not a good reason to risk your life and the lives of others texting while driving. Texting can become a severe distraction which can lead to fatal accidents. According to the survey, some people indicated they could multi-task, while some admitted they could only perform a task at a time.
My viewpoint changed a bit regarding the responses I got from my participants because I expected different answers, with a majority leaning towards text driving being dangerous. Still, what we process and the way we view phenomena are specific to everyone. The survey opened me up and made me realize that respondents were not comfortable giving answers that would portray them in an unfavorable manner, such as being seen not being concerned about the welfare of other road users and the driver’s safety. The survey also presented another perspective where respondents may have given their answers not based on facts but based on their beliefs, attitudes, values, and behaviors regarding the topic under discussion.
A sunny and tranquil afternoon provided a fabulous moment for me to carry out my observations and collect data on what people do during their free time in this park. Though I expected to encounter scores of people out in the garden owing to that conducive weather, the Covid-19 situation did not me that opportunity as most people opted to avoid such places to contain the spread of the virus. Nonetheless, there was something I could gather from those that visited the park that afternoon.
My observation as a method of collecting data provided me with insights into the technique as flexible since I had much time observing what was happening and taking notes without worrying about time constraints. I did my observation until almost everyone had left the park. There were no restrictions of any sort as I needed to pick a vantage point in the garden and start my observation. This method proved effective for me since I did not have to disturb anyone or ask about people’s behaviors and collect reports from others, but it was directly involving.
Content analysis provides a critical platform to examine data collected through qualitative and qualitative approaches to give the nature of data collected, such as in a movie. In content analysis, I employed quantitative methodology to use numerical data from the film to help make the analysis. This quantitative data involves the race of the people in the movie, which is dominated by the black community, gender of the people involved, and age. The method also helps analyze the dress code, dressing patterns, different classes of people in the movie, income, drugs, and sex as portrayed in the film.
The qualitative methodology involves collecting crucial information on the themes and actions in the movie. The methods involved in content analysis are critical as they provide consistency in data collection. My observation skills came in handy in this content collection. It offered an opportunity to exercise my observation skills, write down what I could see, and helped me interpret nonverbal cues and relate them to the movie. This entails active listening to gain an insight into what is happening, paying attention to details to come up with reliable data about the movie’s content. I used Systematic observation and related all I learned in class to classify the entire relevant verbal and nonverbal interactions from the movie.
Meaning in phenomena under study is realized through details from what is presented. Components are critical in every aspect as it provides an opportunity for one to discover various elements and new meanings that were not known to them initially. One may be familiar on thin they are with a particular phenomenon, but they soon realize that what they learned about that specific thing was not what they thought to be. This, therefore, means time and experience make people understand things better and get the reality of issues.
In making the familiar strange, we get to understand the reality of things, and that makes us realize we were, after all, not familiar with what we had thought before as new strange things are discovered along the way. Like couples will think they have known each other way better and trusted in each other, but when they settle and give each additional time, they soon discover that there are details of each other that had not been initially found and that impacts the relationship and sometimes leading to bitter endings.
There are weird things that cannot be explained, and they all depend on situations and circumstances at the moment. This can only be explained by giving detailed accounts of phenomena under study. All details necessary to define a phenomenon must be included to provide clarity. Making the familiar strange helps the researcher’s experiences and perspectives mirror that of their participants.
Through qualitative interviews, I was able to learn about different ethnicities, cultural perspectives, the problems faced by various ethnic groups and cultures, and their solutions. This methodology involves a lot of learning through active listening. The method provides an opportunity for one to act like a detective in trying to get even the simplest of information that could be developed to see a broader picture. The qualitative interview aims to understand the main ideas of participants’ message and relate to your experience, the comparisons and contrasts that would help you draw an evidence-based conclusion and reliable data. This calls for the interviewer to be apt in conversation building and be a good listener. The methodology used is a more positivist approach that allows for statistical analysis methods on the collected data.
The methodology involved in qualitative interviews is different from the normal conversation. I had to prepare questions in advance with analysis and report coming afterward. The great responsibility during the interview is to help focus and direct the discussion so that there is a flow in conversation and data collected. The completeness and accuracy of the results are at the researcher’s discretion. There is so much to be learned through this methodology. It provides an interactive mode that helps the interviewer and interviewee strike a rapport, and one can get additional information critical in making decisions and affecting the final results.
As knowledge expands, so does experience. The research methods employed in each of the projects had a significant influence on the next project as I got to learn along the way, and this changed the perspective on various topics. Through observation, I realized that it was also very critical to employ systematic observation in content analysis because the data collected in content analysis, especially when analyzing a movie, entails observation and other listening skills to develop reliable and tangible data. This idea changed the perspective I had on content analysis, where I did not expect observation overlapping into this methodology and thus provided additional knowledge that is useful for my future research.
Going through the course has had a profound impact on my skills and perspectives as it has tremendously improved my skills and knowledge as a researcher and broadens my viewpoint on research. Though one may sometimes get a different result from what they had anticipated, these surprise results help equip me with the knowledge to embrace flexibility and expect the unexpected as other people respond to the same subject differently. With the knowledge gained in this field of research, I am optimistic that the immense knowledge will lead me to conduct various types of research and come up with accurate and reliable data.
