LOUISIANA HISTORY ESSAY

Louisiana became a state in the United States on April 30, 1812. However, it was facing opposition from people and congress as it tried to become a State. Louisiana also had to have its constitution to become a State. Louisiana’s first constitution was made after the Constitution of Kentucky. Louisiana’s constitution was approved during the constitutional Convection in 1974, made official by the citizens of the State who voted on April 20, 1974, and then it became operational on January 1, 1975.
Louisiana became a wealthy state by using Africans as slaves who would work on their plantations. Louisiana State also practiced slave trade which brought income; hence their economy flourished. The slave was paid low wages and had poor living standards. Slavery came to an end during the American civil war, abolished by the State’s constitution.
Louisiana also acquired Orleans as its territory. Later, in 1815, on January 8, the battle of the Orleans began. The battle was between the British Army, which Major General Sir Edward Pakenham led, and the United States Army, which Major General Andrew Jackson led. The battle started 18 days after a covenant of the Treaty of Ghent, which was used to end the war on 1812, December 24. British attacked New Orleans to take away the territory acquired by the United States, which they bought from Louisiana in 1803. The United States won the battle because Andrew Jackson got help from some 8000 British regulars who had fought in the Napoleonic Wars. This gave them victory, and Andrew Jackson became famous.
Louisiana was also involved in the civil war, where its first battle was fought in East Baton Rouge Parish on August 5, 1862. This took place after New Orleans surrendered to the Union Naval Forces. The way affected Louisiana negatively such that it affected its economy because there were no people to offer labor to the plantation. A large population of Louisiana became slaves, and those who were slaves remained to be slaves because they had no one to rescue them. The State also experienced leadership wrangles. Many soldiers also lost their lives and left their families behind suffering.
After the Civil war, reconstruction took place to bring about changes in several states. Reconstruction is a period in American history that lasted from 1865 to 1877 following the American Civil War. This marked an important chapter in the history of Civil rights in the United States. Louisiana agreed with President Abraham Lincoln’s idea of joining the Southern states into the Union. This was going to take place by choosing skilled personnel to write a new constitution. Abraham Lincoln announced the first exhaustive activities for reconstruction to reintegrate the conquered Southern states. To Lincoln, the intention was to weaken the State rather than an operational plan for the postwar south. When reconstruction came to an end, the Federal Army in the south left, and the blacks did not have anyone to protect them.
Louisiana was later transformed into a new Louisiana by Huey long and Earl long. Huey long changed the political structure into a democratic policy. This means that people were given the right to vote for the leader of their choice. He ensured that those who had excess wealth shared with those who did not have it. People became more educated, and their standards of living improved. Huey also abolished poll tax which made many people turn up for voting.
On the other hand, Earl Kemp, the 45th Governor of Louisiana, also took part in building the new Louisiana. His main plan was to ensure that the teachers were paid, those in charge of schools expanded them, and also ensured that the minority was allowed to vote.
In conclusion, despite Louisiana having some adverse effects, it also experienced some positive effects. Its citizens were educated by those who were more educated and its standards of living improved, and its economy thrived.
