Discuss the main thesis and the subthemes of the letter
George Washington’s letter to King Leopold was the turning point for all people of color throughout the world. The letter disclosed the existence of discrimination in the United States and how George William overcame it. William also addresses the disturbing things he had noted in Congo when he had visited the country in the previous year. Most respectfully and eloquently, he managed to identify Leopold’s faults and pass the appropriate charges against his government. George also notes the disloyalty of the Belgium government. The Belgians had claimed that they had gone to Africa so that they can help the natives in fostering care, which involves, construction of hospitals, a place of education, opportunities of employment, and a chaplain, which was not the case (Blackpast, 2019). William also goes to the extent of addressing the cruel treatment of the European men in the military. In such ways, William manages to point out the beguiling ways of the white men and the disheartened actions of the King of Congo. At this point, he passes twelve charges to Congo’s government, according to his observations.
Critically analyze the main observations of Williams when he visited the Congo.
When William visited Congo, he made several observations, especially regarding the treatment of people. First, he noted the exploitation of the laborers in the country. He noted that these laborers were set to work at one shilling per day, such as low pay. “Upon the arrival of the survivors in the Congo they are set to work as laborers at one shilling a day; as soldiers they are promised sixteen shillings per month, in English money, but are usually paid off in cheap handkerchiefs and poisonous gin (Blackpast, 2019).” William also noted that the Belgians were not who they claimed to be. They exploited the Africans instead of fostering care and securing welfare – which were their initial claim to visit Africa.
What offenses does he accuse King Leopold of committing?
In his open letter to King Leopold, William addressed the Europeans’ evils committed to the Congolese. He also says that Leopold’s government had never been involved in any acts of securing the peoples’ welfare. “There has been, to my absolute knowledge, no “honest and practical effort made to increase their knowledge and secure their welfare.” Your Majesty’s Government has never spent one franc for educational purposes, nor instituted any practical system of industrialism (Blackpast, 2019).” This is, therefore, what paved the way for the European settlers. William also reminded Leopold that all the crimes committed in the land were in his name.
How can the situation in the Congo be addressed?
One of the ways in which the situation in Congo can be addressed is through adopting a new government system. The typical purpose of the government is to protect its people. However, this does not seem to be the case in Congo, as the government is contributing to the exploitation of its subjects. Another way of addressing the situation in Congo is monitoring the Belgians and other Europeans to ensure that they do not exploit the natives. As a matter of fact, the white men should improve the welfare of the natives rather than exploiting them.

I learned several critical concepts from William’s open letter to King Leopold. First, I learned that there was massive discrimination against the Africans as well as the exploitation of laborers. I also learned that when the Belgians arrived in Congo, they did not concern themselves with improving the welfare of the natives but were instead their exploiters. I think that William’s letter was appropriate at the moment as it changed the lives of all Africans in the world. The letter addressed most of the concerns faced by the Africans.
