Growth Mindset Creating Mary Jackson’s Later Success
In Margot Lee Shetterly’s inspirational historical biography, Hidden Figures, we are introduced to the story of Mary Jackson, an intelligent, young, black woman driven by a growth mindset, passion, and hard work to achieve nothing but success in her career. Mary Jackson has portrayed a growth mindset in various ways. Firstly, Mary does not follow suit in pursuing home science or nursing courses as it is the myth in Hampton Institute. Still, she pushes herself to complete two rigorous majors in Mathematics and Physical Science. Although she does not get an engineering job immediately, she remained razor-focused on her goals and objectives to get to her dream career. Shetterly highlights, “Most of Hampton Institute’s female students earned their degrees in home economics or nursing, but Mary Jackson had a strong analytical bent, and she pushed herself to complete not one but two rigorous majors, in mathematics and physical science” (105). Because of her organizing skills and fluency in Mathematics, she gets employed as a secretary and bookkeeper at King Street USO. Shetterly then explains her relentless spirit as she seeks permission to attend night classes at an all-white school for her core engineering courses. Mary was willing to go through all the odds to get the education and skills necessary for her employment as an engineer. She explains that “As a professional engineerin-training with a plan to occupy the building for the nefarious purpose of advancing her education, she needed to petition the city of Hampton for “special permission” to attend classes in the whites-only school” (Shetterly 144). This was a pivotal moment in Vaughan’s success because later, she gets promoted to a professional engineer at NASA. Ultimately, Mary’s relentless mindset and hard work brought forth her dream career to reality. She finally gets the respect she deserves from her colleagues because of her intelligence in the engineering field.
After closely analyzing chapter ten through chapter seventeen of Hidden Figures, we can see that Shetterly uses various rhetorical appeals to make her writing effective. One device she quite well is logos which is when she explains racial segregation and discrimination in the society and workplace. In the second section of her book, she illustrates the difference in resource sharing for black and white people in education. For instance, Shetterly reveals that “Mary Jackson needed to petition the city of Hampton for “special permission” to attend classes in the whites-only school for her engineering course” (144). When she includes these detail, readers would understand the challenging and tiresome process black people would face to get a higher level education which is persuasive because readers related to the story since racial discrimination still happens today. Another rhetorical strategy Shetterly utilizes ethos, where she explains Mary Jackson as a leader of the Girl Scouts, which was committed to preparing young women to take their place in the world. This would move readers to see the unity and communalism promoted in the society even despite the challenges they faced as black people. Specifically, Shetterly shares, “Mary became a combination of teacher, big sister, and fairy godmother, helping her girls with algebra homework, sewing dresses for their proms and steering them toward college. Most of all, she went out of her way to provide them with the kinds of experiences that would expand their understanding of what was possible in their lives” (107). This helps us understand that we have a social responsibility to help society with the little we have. We should be a beacon of hope and good role models for the youth to emulate.
