Fourth of July
Fourth of July is marked as an independence day in the United States and people tend to celebrate this each year. The celebrations marked the rise and enabling of the United States to contribute to world affairs. The African Americans however faced discrimination in a south way after the independence. Also, there was violence, and the police attacked striking workers before fourth July causing much panic among the people and some lost their jobs. The celebrations have shown a great change over the years; discussed below is how the celebrations differed and the emerging of the celebration day.
The emergence of Fourth July celebrations
During the middle of the 1700s, the England colonies felt that they were not ready to pay taxes and be ruled by a leader who was miles away (Dean 27). They were not allowed to have representatives in the parliament and most colonies wanted to govern themselves and become free of the British rules. The colonialists were not contented with these set rules; however, achieving this was not an easy task and it needed much effort and tolerance. Secret groups were formed and tension grew but the ruler sent more troops to ensure British law is followed. The Boston massacre and the high taxes on the tea merchants made the colonialists angry and they decided to take a step toward self-governance. The colonialists’ congress was held where they set up their grievances which were against the rulings; they also protested and trained for military.
The war began and the colonialists were ready to fight against the British; this was in April 1775 (Dean 27). Congress chose the commander who led them in fighting this war; they fought for eight years. The British military was well equipped but the Americans had advantages since they were familiar with the hiding places and they hid in the forests with no uniforms making them less visible. A war characterized by words came about just before fourth July threatening people that they would be executed for signing a draft. However, on fourth July the United States cut all its ties with England were cut becoming an independent nation; hence giving this day reason to be celebrated.
Changing of July celebrations
Fourth of July has been celebrated for a long period, by use of speeches and parades to show patriotism and a sign of success from the British rule. In the nineteenth century, however, several Americans chose to observe instead of celebrating. The celebrations, often, were not complete without a speech during the nineteenth century. It is shown that in the year 1819 the Independence Day celebrations were held in center square in Philadelphia (Brown and Shannon 11). People were busy eating, drinking, and enjoying music; as the military was organizing parades, and the officers celebrate as they show signs of victory. In the nineteenth century, the fourth of July celebrations were affected by the immigrations and assimilations into the American culture. They however got to adapt and join in the celebrations. Every year on the Fourth of July the Americans get a holiday from work and schools to celebrate and go for picnics. The guns and use of fireworks were prohibited for safety reasons in the early nineteenth century.
Differing of celebration according to race
The United States gathered to celebrate in Philadelphia but that was not the same case everywhere else. The president, Grant, whose ruling was defined by corrupt acts and the black community was not getting any support. The party involved in the support for blacks had collapsed; without this support, the African Americans encountered an increasing rate of discrimination and violence especially on the southern part (Brown and Shannon 3). There was panic due to the financial crisis which led to bankruptcy in the industries affecting the economy and many people were jobless. The police and the security agents attacked any workers who attempted to strike. The civilians too were involved in attacking the immigrants; they blamed them for making the country’s financial state deteriorate. There was violence all over, the American army was fighting the campaign of scorched earth policy.
The celebrations of the Fourth of July, therefore, found many people in the states not in the mood for any celebrations as this was necessary each year. William was one of the people who fought against racial discrimination and he ended up publishing an essay talking about this particular occasion. He tried to show an act of humiliation and confession for being guilty of various things like slavery and oppression. It is necessary to get the idea that people should treat their colleagues equally without considering their skin color, their size, or where they come from. Many organizations have been formed to help curb discrimination in public or private places. This has therefore led to cooperation enabling people living together to work in unity avoiding financial crisis despite the race.
Gender
Just like William, Susan too felt that the time was ready for the nation to complete its unfinished business (Brown and Shannon 3). Being a leader in the National Woman Suffrage Association, she had requested that the organization be added to the fourth July’s program in Philadelphia. The sponsor’s event however denied her this request but she still attended this event accompanied by her colleagues. She ordered the declaration of women’s rights to be read to the crowd, including impeaching the leaders due to denial of basic rights. Gender discrimination does not necessarily mean people of a certain race and both women and men face this challenge. During these celebrations, men were more considered as compared to women. The soldiers involved in fighting for independence, most of them were men and they faced several challenges on the battlefield, others lost their lives.
However, they tend to forget that as the soldiers were at war the women took care of the family and acted as the husband and wife at home. Therefore, as people celebrate the success of independence as shown on the battlefield, the women too should be celebrated for their courage and not giving up on their soldiers at war. Just like the men’s basic rights are catered for, the women too have all the rights to have listened. The organizations have played an important role in enabling equal rights in both genders bringing about unity among people.
Social class
People grouping themselves in their different classes is a big issue, especially among poor people. The rich tend to group themselves avoiding and regarding others as poor people (Wright 3). Social classes have been there for a long time and since the celebrations were being held every year on fourth July, people celebrated differently too. People would go for picnics, have plenty of food, drinks and lots of dancing. They would also watch as the fireworks are lit in the evening for entertainment. Not everyone would afford much of the partying, thus it would be better for the rich to share and celebrate with the people who could barely afford it.
The president also ensured that the speech has been delivered; this happened even before the technology spread all over. The speech could reach countable people and this type of communication could hardly solve certain complaints or even tell people of the nation’s progress. Fourth of July should be one of the days to create awareness to people that no matter the social class, people can still come together without any discrimination. Individuals with enough basic needs and luxuries should learn to share with others and help to build others up since this contributes to community growth and unity.
Fourth July Celebration in the recent years
The fourth of July in recent years has no much difference as compared to the first celebration of Independence Day. The lighting of fireworks is evident up to date and people watching them in the beautiful skies with much joy. Thousands of fireworks displays are lit each year on the fourth, and other days too other than the fourth July. Americans spend a lot of money on foods and drinks on the Fourth of July. More food and beer are sold on this celebration day as compared to any other day in the whole year. People opt to go for picnics too to spend their holiday elsewhere apart from home, just like the past century as it is written.
Eating salmon on the Fourth of July was considered a tradition in England and has become so even in recent years (Serafino). Salmon was in surplus during the middle of summer; this was therefore the common meal in most of the homesteads. In addition, Americans tend to consume a large number of hot dogs on this particular day as compared to other days. There would be competitions too for eating, races with music and in other places people would match in parades dressed in traditional uniforms. Each year on Fourth July is marked as a holiday among the Americans and they do not attend schools or go to work. It is a day of joy and celebrations for the citizens to mark their independence day.
