Week 8 –Signature Assignment: Create a Research Proposal

Abstract

There is a growing concern of body evidence that shows sleep deprivation may profoundly affect academic performance. This mock research paper speculates that lack of sleep in students results in a negative subject correlation of cognitive behavior and academic achievement. This paper will review the longitudinal evidence of previous experimental studies that students with poor sleeping habits perform dismally due to increased stress levels and lack of enough sleep. The study will examine the relationship between inadequate sleep time and student behavior patterns to establish whether sleep contributes to poor academic performance.

Effects of Lack of Sleep on Academic Performance

Introduction

Students who have insomnia may exhibit detrimental cognitive and developmental performance. The importance of enough sleep among students is essential, mainly because most students spend most of their time on social media, watching television, and using electronic devices.  Besides, overwhelming school work and assignments can also cause stress and anxiety. Correspondingly, part-time jobs may interfere with student sleeping hours. Regardless of the contributing factor, lack of enough sleep affects students’ academic performance. Sleep is essential for well-being and should be a priority as it rejuvenates the body to function correctly.

This research will investigate the socio-demographic factors, personality characteristics, and extracurricular activities as critical components of poor performance and cognitive performance. Therefore, the central question of the study is: can lack of enough sleep cause poor performance? Secondly, can inadequate sleep affect students’ behavior and overall well-being? The analysis is critical in addressing the effects of sleep deprivation on mental health and behavior patterns.  Moreover, the research is relevant to clinical psychology and social psychology in studying a child’s social skills and personality characteristics.

Literature Review

Many studies investigate the correlations between sleep deprivation and academic performance. Becker, Adams, Orr, and Quilter (2008), studied the factors that affect students’ sleeping patterns. The research team engaged forty-nine thousand four hundred and sixty tow participants randomly chosen from different institutions. The study population exempted students who engage in promiscuous sexual behavior and drug addicts. The study required the participants to fill a self-report survey. The participants filled a sleeping time report and academic self- report. The questionnaire also contained questions about age, gender, relational status, and daily working hours. The findings indicated that sleeping time directly affects students’ performance, quality of sleep, and other factors such as healthy relationships, participation in physical activities, and healthy Body Index.

A study conducted by Clinkinbeard, Simi, Evans, and Anderson (2011), showed that children sleeping for eight hours experience insignificant delinquency than children sleeping for seven hours or less daily. The study collected data from the first wave of adolescents ranging from 7th to 12th grade. The questionnaire addressed the participant’s personal lives, social relationships, and demographic characteristics. Moreover, the participant revealed sleeping hours, depressive symptoms, impulsivity, parental supervision, and late-night activities by filling other questionnaire sections. The second phase of the study used an in-house interview to collect the data. The students were randomly selected using the school roster. The in-house survey was an in-depth analysis of the student’s delinquent behavior, sexual relationships, and familial relationships. Lastly, the questionnaire examined parental role in permissiveness and supervision. The results showed that adolescents who received seven hours of sleep or less demonstrate a positive relationship to property delinquency, while adolescents who sleep for six hours or less exhibit violent delinquency. Thus, the study revealed a positive relationship between sleep deprivation and delinquent behavior.

Finally, a study by Ahrberg, Dresler, Niedermaier , Steiger, and Genzel (2012), attributes poor academic and stress to sleeping habits such as insomnia, difficulty in falling asleep, and difficulty maintaining sleep. The research highlights that lack of sleep coupled with anxiety causes poor academic performance. The study’s methodology required answering the web-based survey questions at three pivotal times: during the semester, on pre-examination preparation, and eight weeks after examination completion. The participants were medical students. The ten-point stress scale survey investigated pre-clinical board exam, social demographic characteristics, and the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI). The PSQI addressed student’s sleeping habits such as sleep duration, sleep disturbance, and sleep latency to assess the student’s sleep patterns. The study suggested that poor sleep quality correlates to depressive symptoms among clinical students.  Furthermore, the findings proposed positive stress levels in correlation with student’s sleep quality during exams. The PSQI results reflected significant correlations between stress and exam grades among clinical students.

Supportive family affects the impact of violence exposure and other traumatic experience. Research by Lepore, Kiewer (2013) conducted a systematic investigation on trauma, violence, sleep, medication, and path. The randomized controlled study selected people with a history of trauma and those with a current test on mediating effects of sleep, trauma, health, psychological and physiological results. The study showed a positive relationship between sleep as a mediator to potential health and psychological outcome. The analysis of the reviewed literature demonstrates a connection between sleep deprivation and academic performance. Sleep affects the student’s psychology and grades.

Research Questions and Hypothesis

The alternative hypothesis of the study states that that sleep deprivation will indicate positive correlations to decreased performance. The study aims to reaffirm that sleep deprivation reflects the hypothesized dismal performance. Correspondingly, the null hypothesis states that anxiety, stress, and fear determine students’ sleeping habits and behavior patterns. The research will explore the relationship between sleeping habits, other sociological factors, and student’s behavior patterns.  The research questions focus on the dependent and independent variables: sleep deprivation and academic performance. The research questions are:

Can lack of enough sleep cause poor performance

Can inadequate sleep affect students’ behavior and overall well-being?

Does other sociological reasons affect the student’s sleeping habits

Research Methods

This study will use questionnaires and surveys issued to students to complete and give a report. The survey will ask questions about family relationships, delinquent participation, and sexual relationships. The participants can choose to ask the fill the responses at home or school. The survey will include home-based interviews administered to parents to incorporate a CASI system that records students’ sensitive topics. However, the questionnaire also addressed student delinquency behavior by selecting the appropriate response category selection. The students’ questionnaire will address a five-item scale of property delinquency ranging from deliberate property damage, stealing from the school store, stealing from work, stealing items less than 50 dollars to contemplating theft worth 50 dollars.

Population

The study is conducted among college and high school students of all races, gender, and social-economic status. The research will engage high school students in the seventh through to twelfth grade. Besides, the survey will cut across the study years regardless of the academic performance. Moreover, the data will be obtained from the parents and guardians of the students who participate in the survey. The eligibility of the participants is that one must be a student and active student who do not miss the examination. The demographics variables included male, female, white, and non-white populations. The sample selected students aged sixteen and above.

Sampling

Several college and high school students will be selected for the study to save on time and resources rather than studying the entire population. Obtaining and analyzing data from the whole student population will be impossible due to time constrain. The study will use probability sampling to include every element of the target population. The study also intends to produce an accurate and representative sample. The study will meet the inclusion criteria by conducting random sampling of the population study to obtain a specific outcome. The parents’ population is the easiest to sample as the research will follow up on students selected for the task.

Procedure

The data will be analyzed through descriptive statistics and correlative design. The descriptive statistics will examine the demographics and psychological measures. Conversely, the inferential statistics will determine whether the difference in sleeping hours results in stress and anxiety, which eventually affects a student’s performance.  The independent sample represents the null and alternative hypotheses. The correlative design will analyze sleep deprivation and poor academic to monitor the change n the variables.

Measures

A questionnaire that asked questions about student activities will measure the effect of lack of sleep on academic performance was obtained by using. The frequency of engaging in other activities will be measured by a four-point scale ranging from rarely, most, fairly, and all the time. The question will include how often does a student uses an electronic device? How many hours does a student spend doing a part-time job? The scores of the measurement will determine the lack of sleep among sampled student population? The study will use a three-item index that gauges the frequency of parent interaction with students. The interview questions include: are the parents at home when you leave for school? Is the parent at home when a student returns from school? Does the parent monitor the student’s time?

Data Type and Collection

The study will use quantitative measures to collect the data. The study intends to qualify the variables to demonstrate the relevance of the research hypothesis by surveying and interviewing the study sample. The study will use a stratified sampling technique to ensure the survey reflect the entire students. Moreover, the data type collected from the sampled population will represent the numerical constitution of the quantitative data. The study will use a standard interview. The interview questions are a set of structured questions that the researcher will ask the respondents. Since the study aims to collect quantitative data, the research will observe respondent behavior when administering the

interview.

Ethical protection of the Participants

Keeping the participants anonymous will solve the ethical protection concerns of the selected population since students may refuse to participate in the research for fear of being exposed. The researcher will explain the nature of the study and the protection rights of the participant before the study commence. Besides, the participants will receive a consent form before participation to promote trust between the participants and the researcher.

Validity

The research findings will determine the validity of the research proposal. The quantitative data collection method of the research will justify the fact of this study. The study will sample the student population to ensure everyone is represented, thus making the research reliable. Since the research seeks to analyze student academic performance, lack of honesty might hinder the study results. Some students may refuse to disclose their educational information.

Role of the Researcher

The researcher will inform the dissemination and reporting, publication, and presentation of the research findings. The researcher will avail the research findings to allow participants access. Nonetheless, the researcher is responsible for addressing ethical concerns about disclosing participants’ identity and authenticity of the study. Lastly, the researcher ensures the investigation is free from biases to achieve credibility.
