The second story, “Enemies,” is about a doctor faced with the death of his child. He is confronted by a man in his home who claims that he has a sick wife in need of medical attention as soon as possible. The doctor faces a dilemma of helping the ill individual and staying at home and grieving with her. The books depict the anger that Dr. Kirilov has after realizing that he has been tricked. The death of his son and grief causes him to become quarrelsome, showing that flawed physicians cannot work effectively.

A flaw is an imperfection that mars an object, substance, or person. Some physicians tend to have certain flaws that are depicted through their character. These flaws may be different for these physicians. Flaws in human beings may be a natural occurrence or a developed one. Physicians with flaws have specific characteristics. It is significant to understand the relationship between flaws in the person and effects on his career as a physician.
Flaws in physicians are depicted in books such as “The Yellow Wallpaper” and “Enemies.” These books provide depictions of three physicians (Dr. John and Dr. Kirilov). These two physicians have different flaws. Dr. John is faced with the challenge of living with a sick wife who and pays little interest to this ill wife. Dr. Kirilov faces the death of their only child before being tricked into going and healing a sick wife.
For physicians, unethical behavior and flaws may be a wonder to many. They are seen as ethical human beings as their profession is based on ethics and moral codes. These codes ensure that their behavior is ethical. Physicians are human beings and therefore are bound to behave like the rest of the population. It implies that they are faced with the same problems experienced by others. These flaws can include personal problems within the family that easily trigger anger and lack of faith, as is in the two stories: The Yellow Wallpaper and Enemies.
Flaws affect the performance of doctors and physicians in general. When a doctor is faced with a situation that affects his behavior or mood, that is a flaw that may affect performance. Doctors swear oaths that dictate them to specific methods and paths. In the Yellow Wallpaper, Dr. John lives with his sick wife, who is forced to lay in bed most days of the week as she has been diagnosed with anxiety disorder. Her husband claims that she is a doctor and will know when she recovers well and does not need to be told (Gilman 317). Dr. John condemns his wife to live in the upper part of the house, where she sleeps all day and stays in bed.
Dr. John is depicted by the author, his dearest wife, as practiced in the extreme, with no patience with faith, and has an intense horror of superstition (Gilman 317). These are his flaws, and they do not at all make him a better physician. He pays little attention to his sick wife and constantly dismisses her opinions. Dr. John dictates her life by moving her to a room with ugly yellow wallpaper. The protagonist portrays her husband as loving and caring, but in the real sense, he is not. John fails to provide his wife with the necessary attention by leaving her all by herself in this big and wide room.
A good physician should provide the necessary guidance and assistance in the healing process rather than keep a patient isolated just because she suffers from anxiety. Physicians should be caring for their patients. Dr. John’s flaws make him a lousy doctor as he withholds treatment necessary for the wife’s recovery. It is a clear indication that flaws do not make better physicians. The wife ends up never recovering and gets even worse.
Dr. Kirilov is faced with attending to a patient and grieving for his recently dead son. He ends up being persuaded by his customer, who claims that his wife is quite sick and lies in bed back at his house. The two leave and head to the customer’s home to assist the ill wife. Dr. Kirilov reaches the customer’s home, and to his surprise, the man’s wife is nowhere to be found. The house is silent as a tomb. The customer later realizes that this was a scheme pre-planned by his wife to escape with her lover (Chekov 36)
Dr. Kirilov is confused about the customer’s utterances. He asks for the patient to undertake an examination. Once he learns that the customer’s wife is not in the house and has been deceived, he becomes angry and frustrated. It prompts him to ask for his transport back home to his grieving wife. Kirilov is flawed in that he is a grieving man whose concentration involves his wife and their dead child. The death of his child has caused pain to him, thus putting him in an unsatisfactory situation.
Flaws may affect temperaments. Dr. Kirilov becomes frustrated with his current predicament and seeks to find a solution by becoming quarrelsome. He agreed to come by, stating that he is obligated to examine the patient under number thirteen of the regulations (Chekov 33). It is an indication that he was a good doctor as he follows the oaths that he swore to withhold. His flaws make him an angry man who leaves the house and heads straight home, claiming that he has never witnessed such deceit in his whole life.
In conclusion, flaws may tend to make physicians less committed to their professions. Behavior change is a problem that affects the physician making him less productive in his career. It is vividly clear through these characters that flaws in physicians do not make them better. Imperfections, therefore, do not make better physicians.
