Abstract

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are important aspects of society. The social aspects of diversity, equity, and inclusion ensure that people live together in harmony and respecting one another. The united states have been faced with diverse challenges for many years. Slavery has been one of the many challenges whose effects have been felt up to date. Amanda Gorman read her poem, The Hill We Climb, at the presidential inauguration for the current president of the United States. The poem describes the current situation in the country as well as past experiences that people have had. Gorman identifies herself as the daughter of a single mother who was a slave. Slavery had negative effects on inequality, exclusion, and discrimination. The lack of representation and justice has continued to this day in the United States of America. Gorman applauds America’s progress in fostering diversity, justice, and inclusion. Gorman inspires Americans with the poem’s message of optimism for a better future for everyone. She tells Americans that progress does not happen overnight but takes time and commitment to improving the current situation. People would be able to achieve a common good by working together as citizens of one country. Promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion requires a personal action plan. Before advocating for others to support diversity and inclusion, it’s important to start with yourself.

Gorman describes herself as a slim black girl who finds herself reciting for the president in the piece. The speaker refers to herself as a skinny black girl descended from slaves. Slavery in the United States was a legal construct of human enslavement, mostly of Africans and African Americans. According to conflict theory, society is marked by widespread inequality due to social status, ethnicity, gender, and other factors. Fundamental flaws in a society’s system cause social problems. Their masters saw slave kids as precious resources with financial value (Hilliard 2013). Slave children lived in chains. Positive interpersonal relationships, self-efficacy, independence, and a sense of intent and meaning in life are all psychological well-being components. Enslaved people’s treatment in the United States vary depending on the time and location, but it was generally harsh, particularly on plantations. The selling of one or more family members was a common way for families to be broken up. According to Kohlberg’s theory of moral development, moral development prohibits individuals from acting on uncontrolled desires instead of focusing on what is good for society and others (Batson 2016). Therefore, it was morally correct to regard slaves as people and with dignity. Unfortunately, just a small percentage of those who were slaves received something approaching humane treatment. Slaves were subjected to brandings, assaults, floggings, and other forms of punishment in addition to being overworked. According to the theory of development, everyone must go through the same transitions in the same order.

Children learn through their interactions in their immediate environment. Knowledge is constructed and reconstructed by the learner. Growing up as a slave child in such a setting made it natural and the only care they knew. According to symbolic interactionism, individuals construct their roles as they communicate, rather than learning the responsibilities that society has placed out for them. Person interactions result in social problems. People frequently learn from the people with whom they interact. When the slave victims’ lives are dependent on the acts of their attackers, the slaves’ emotional reactions change to gratitude until they survive. When slaves were released, they would show their gratitude. Feeling helpless develops positive feelings toward the abuser or controller, rationalizes to tolerate such actions, reacts negatively to family or friends who attempt to help, and has trouble escaping the emotional pit. Slaves were isolated from other slaves, making it impossible for them to free themselves. When individuals live in a world of abuse and control, they quickly learn to be cautious about what they say and avoid, causing unrest that could lead to violence. The behavior theory explains the stimulus and response behavior. Interactions with the world are the source of all learned habits. Positive behavior is praised, whereas negative behavior is punished. According to the functionalism theory, societal issues undermine a society’s stability. For a strong society, social stability is needed. Keeping social order means avoiding circumstances or events that could lead to unrest (Tierney 2014). It may be difficult to break away from such a relationship since the victim is often bound emotionally and by threats and other responsibilities. The speaker identifies certain life events such as recruiting the poem in front of the United States president as an opening to liberating herself from the social problem.

Amanda Gorman is a writer who lives in New York City. The country we are climbing represents a country aiming for steady, continuous progress rather than perfection. The United States is still riven with strife and adversity. It is, however, worth noting the country’s success in the area of justice. America’s challenges can’t all be fixed at once, but that’s no excuse to give up hope that things will improve dramatically over time. The nation has recently been undergoing a difficult time of hate and division. Nevertheless, the challenge and discomfort of trying to make lasting change for the better do not deter Americans (Nugent & Schinkel 2016).

The speaker encourages today’s Americans to understand the history (both positive and bad) they have inherited and improved what needs to be improved. Gorman emphasizes the importance of moving forward rather than reverting to old habits. Americans must act now for the sake of future generations. Victory is accomplished not by aggression or war but by constructing various bridges between Americans and bringing society together. In the example of the new president’s inauguration, Gorman uses the concept of light to imply a fresh start for Americans. Democracy, according to Gorman, can be postponed from time to time, but it cannot be defeated. Rather than regressing, the nation must move forward.

The poem The Hill We Ascend is a democratic poem that expresses confidence in the people’s ability to be the sun. Instead of looking forward to a new future, the light should turn to the past and begin to dissolve the country’s past of social deprivation, inequality, and other challenges. The challenges in front are not mountains but hills that can be climbed. Gorman urges Americans to be a light that illuminates the past, illuminates the present, and improves past events. Being the sun entails illuminating the horrors of the past.

The hill we climb represents optimism for a brighter future. Early experiences influence the hope for a better future. The speaker gets a lot of optimism from the slaves’ experiences and the current situation in America. By concentrating on the unconscious, psychoanalysis investigates the causes that drive actions. As suggested by the speaker, previous experiences should motivate Americans to continue fighting for the light. Prior interactions and cognitive, emotional, and environmental factors all play a role in how a perception or worldview is gained or altered. The learning theory explains how people obtain, process, and remember information. The hill we climb exemplifies how one’s upbringing and surroundings have influenced how one treats others. Gorman urges all Americans to correct past errors to move forward as a united front. She reminds Americans that righting past wrongs is a long process and that things do not improve overnight, but that enabling the country’s beauty to shine through will make society much better.

Action Plan

According to Tyagi et al. (2015), an action plan is a series of steps or activities that individuals must complete to achieve their objectives. An action plan on diversity, equality, and inclusion is meant to serve as a path map for individuals working to change society’s climate (Guillaume et al., 2013). Acceptance and reverence are first and foremost. Every person is one-of-a-kind in a good way. Individual variations are complemented in a constructive way when they are recognized. Efforts to achieve the highest level of competence, empowerment, and accountability would provide a standard of justice, openness, and consistent care. Words and acts inappropriate or derogatory regarding other people’s abilities, talents, or attributes are unnecessary and project a negative picture. Encouragement of the acknowledgment of holidays and occasions observed by citizens in various parts of the world contributes to a better understanding of various cultural groups’ values. To promote justice, people must be able to fix injustice as it occurs. Creating a forum where people can openly discuss their concerns is one way to promote diversity. Inappropriate remarks and acts must be dealt with efficiently. Focusing on communities to encourage thoughts beyond the personal level and to foster neighborliness and collaboration.

Participation isn’t the only way to be included. Being supportive, politely curious, and sincerely interested in each other’s cultures are the cornerstones of inclusion. Establishing simple, concrete, measurable, and time-bound diversity, equality, and inclusion goals Identifying personal flaws and inconsistencies and setting new objectives Self-assessment is the act of examining oneself to evaluate essential aspects of one’s personality. Personal assessment helps people be more responsible and improve their judgmental abilities (Neff & Germer 2013).

In conclusion, diversity, equity, and inclusion are major issues that different countries have been battling for many years. The recent inauguration in the united states saw Gorman recite her poem the hill we climb. The poem is a metaphor for how far the Americans have come and together with the far they can achieve.
