Rationale: This lesson would begin by introducing students to the history of Greek and the culture of the time. The student would learn the role that art played in this society and how social stratification was during the period. The student would also learn how the rich lived by analyzing their dressing and their luxury living.
Students would be able to:
Define culture as represented in arts
Explain the critical aspects that are described in the image
Understand how culture has changed from the period to this time.
Understand the religion and culture of the people during the time of Constantine.
Hook”/Introduction: this week, we have been looking and the social stratification and the culture during Greek society. We have been discussing how society was stratified between the rich and the poor. Today we are seeking to explore the representation of the poor and the rich in Greek society.
Discussion:
Before we start what do you know about the culture of the Greek society.
There should be some enthusiasm from the class about this question
Why do you think it is essential to learn about Greek culture. What are some of the aspects of this culture that have influenced the current society?
I will ask a few students to discuss a few issues about what they know about the Greek culture.
Direct Instruction/Guided Practice (20 minutes)
The lesson will start by projecting the images from the works of art. The student would be prompted to answer several questions such as what they are looking at, what they can tell about the images, and why they think the pictures are presented in a particular way. They would also be required to state the cultural aspects they can tell from the photos.
I will explain to the student the meaning of this painting and what it tells about the culture of the time.
The baptism of Constantine represents the cultural practice during the period. Baptism was both a religious and artistic practice. The culture continued for an extended period, and even during the Roman Empire, we can see that it had a central role. The culture is still evident today. Besides, the baptism depicts the royal stature of the family. The dresses that guests are wearing seemingly display some status. It is quite apparent that this was a royal family based on the colors and the quality of material in their gowns.
The painting is the representation of the social status of the leaders in this society. The rich in this society were represented in how they dressed, their activities, and the people they socialized.
Independent Practice (20 minutes)
I will introduce the culmination of the subject. Now that we have learned about the culture of the Greek royals, we shall now analyze an image and identify these aspects.
I will divide the class into four groups. Each group would be required to analyze the painting that they have been given from the analysis write a group’s report. Each student would have their point that they have contributed towards the writing of the report. The student would be required to look at the aspects of culture, religion, royalty as they are represented in the paintings. The individual reports should be combined into one report and presented as a group report.
After the introduction and the students have offered the understanding and the symbols of religion that they have seen in the painting, it would be possible to understand the level of knowledge that they have gathered. At this stage, I would know if the student is able to successfully analyze the painting and if they can point out the aspects of culture.

The assessment would focus on analyzing the reports that the student would provide. The report should display student understanding of the culture and the effective description of the images.
