| Introduction: “Morning class. Today we will learn more about suffixes and with the help of the book ‘Ribbit’ written by Rodrigo Folgueira and illustrated by Poly Bernatene, we will learn about drawing conclusions. I had already introduced suffixes last week. Who can tell me what suffixes are? Yes. Exactly, suffixes are a part of word that is attached to a root word to change its meaning. Ok, what then is a root word? Anyone to guess? Ok. I want you to discuss with members of your table and then tell me what a root word is.” After they have discussed for about 2 minutes, I will then appoint a member from each group to tell me what they have agreed upon as the meaning of a root word, and then I will say, “A root word is a basic word with no prefix or suffix added to it.”
“Specifically, In the book Ribbit, we will be looking at the three words declared, exclaimed and disturbed. Before we read the books and identify the three words, I want you to get out your word knowledge flipchart and indicate how much you know about the three words. As the lesson progresses, I want you to adjust your level of understanding.” I will read the book to them as we identify the words, write them down on the whiteboard, and record them on the word wall. I will then ask,” What is similar about the three words?” After they identify that each term ends with “ed,” I will explain that the “ed” ending is the suffix. Afterwards, I will give the students an activity where they will write five other words that they are familiar with that end with the suffix “ed.” |
| Lesson/Activity: “Now that we have finished identifying the suffixes, I want us to learn about drawing conclusions.” I will point a chair to them and ask them whether it is a book. They will reject the idea, and I will ask them why. They will point out that it is not a book because it is made of wood, it has four legs, a flat sitting surface, and it cannot be opened, among other reasons. I will say, “You have used the strategy of drawing conclusions, which we will also apply in the Ribbit.
I will supply the students with several Ribbit storybooks on each table. Then we will start analyzing the book page by page to provide them with a better understanding of concluding. When the frogs met the pig at the beginning of the book, the chief frog asked, “What can we do for you?’ “What did the little pig say?” When they answer Ribbit, I will then ask them “What was the response of the frogs? They will answer, “What did he say? Does he think he is a frog? Is he making fun of us?” I will then explain that by asking these three questions, the pigs were drawing conclusions about what the pig meant by saying “Ribbit.” They concluded that the pig was making fun of them by mimicking their “Ribbit” sound. The next scenario is when news of the pig who thought he was a frog spread, and the animals remarked, “This relative of yours is a little pink.” I will then explain to the students that the animals were drawing a conclusion that since the pig was making frog sounds, he must be related to the pigs. After identifying the two instances of drawing conclusions in the book, I will give the students a test. “Now that you have learnt how to draw conclusions, I want you to identify two other scenarios of concluding in this book. You will do this Activity in groups comprising of the four members of your table. After you have identified them, I want you to write down an explanation of the conclusions as a group.”

| Summary/Closure: After the students have undertaken the Activity, I will supply them with photographs of people undertaking different activities. Each table will get four pictures, and each student will individually look at the pictures and draw conclusions about what they think is happening. They will write their answers separately and then turn in their work for grading. |
| Evaluation: I will evaluate the students by assigning grades for their four answers. A student that scores four will get excellent, one who gets three great, a score of two will get a good trial, and finally, one score will get fair. |
