Kate Chopin is an American female write who published her works “The Storm” in 1969. Back then, storms were dangerous and so frequent in southern parts of the united states. Alcee, one of the characters in the storm, looks for a place to get shelter from his long-time lover named Calixta (Baker & Christopher 225). Both Calixta and Alcee were once in a relationship and had decided to flee together but ended up marrying different people. At this time of the storm, Alcee and Calixta rekindled their love, but Alcee leaves on time before Calixtas family returns since she knows perfectly that the affair can’t go far. Bobinot is married to Calixta, and they have a son, while Alcee is married to Clarisse, who is on vacation. However, after their sexual encounter during the storm, Alcee and Calixta feel satisfied, and the incident keeps them more committed to their spouses (Baker & Christopher 225). For instance, Calixta, who is always preoccupied with her daily duties at home, does not care about her husband Bobinot when the storm strikes but returns the husband and son a worried about Calixtas safety. In addition to this, Calixtas believes sex, love and marriage are separate during the sexual encounter with Alcee noting further that one can marry a different person who they don’t feel so good at but have the great pleasure that results in peace that keeps married couples together.
Calixtas Believe that Love Marriage and Sex Are Detached Entities
Calixta is married to Bobinot, and together they blessed with a four-year-old son called Bibi. Calixtas husband, Bobinot and their son Bibi went shopping at a nearby store called Freidheimer’s store. The weather changed suddenly while at the store with dark clouds. Thunder stroke several times, and the air w just still. Bobinot and son were patient enough until the weather calmed down. Calixtas, son Bibi, feared that her mother could be afraid of repeated storms (Bender & Bert 185). Besides, Calixta is not worried about her husband, Bobinot. The behaviour measures her love and care for Bobinot. She portrays when the rain and storms begin. Calixtar cares less that her husband could be in danger.
All Calixta does is struggle to make sure her properties are not rained on. A great deal of time had passed since Calixta, and Alcee saw each other. For instance, if the incident of the stormy rain had not occurred, Alcee would not have taken shelter at Calixtas home. Calixta portrays the character of ales caring partner when the storms begin. She is also seen as a self-centred individual who prioritizes her work and personal needs as the head of her marriage (Bender & Bert 186). Calixtas believes that marriage and love are separate because she disrespects her marital vows to remain faithful to Bobinot.
Further, she portrays that having an affair with Alcee inside her matrimonial home is separate from her love for Bobinot marriage. After the arrival of Bobinot and their son, Calixtar does not show any concern to welcome them back home. Bobinot is extremely ready to apologize to Calixtar to show the concern of getting home late, but she is not interested in any of them. Another way Calixtar shows that marriage, sex, and love are separate because she shows happiness after their family returns home. Still, deep inside, she understands she has broken her marriage vows but does not care about that. For instance, the hypocrisy is seen further went she is overjoyed at the shrimp that her husband brought her as a gift, but deep inside, she had just brought Alcee (Bender & Bert 187). Calixta also shows that marriage and love are separate when she should resist the temptation to sleep with Alcee. Immediately after the lightning stroke, Calixta fell in Alcees arms gave them old infatuation memories. The conversation between Calixta and Alcee remind them of sweet memories they had in the past rekindled. The desire for each other’s flesh grew further. Calixtas believes that love, sex, and marriage are heightened by her inability to resist the kisses from Alcee. With that in mind, Calixtar shows that it is pretty much okay to love and have sex with an individual you are not married to since they appear as different entities. Their continuous kissing resulted in passionate love between them, but after the storm calmed down, Calixta and Alcee see the need to go separate ways. Calixta further shows the difference between marriage and love when her husband shows the fear to go home with muddy shoes after the rain. Normally, a husband should get a warm reception at home, but Calixtar is seen as an individual who would not give her husband a warm welcome if they made her house dirty after cleaning it. Calixta how an individual can still have a passionate affair with a different person who is not their spouse and still be happy, not necessarily the spouse (Bender & Bert 190).

People often marry and have sexual relationships with those they love, not the way Calixtar portrays the three elements as three different entities. God created human beings in his image and likeness through sex and marriages, which opposes Calixtas belief that they are separate. Through sex, couples form an intimacy with each other in marriage, showing that the three are related and opposes Calixtas behaviour of being self-centred. In addition to this, couples in marriage should love and remain faithful to each other according to their vows instead of Calixtas and Alcees unfaithful behaviour to their spouses (De &Vanessa 60). Betrayal in love and sexual marriages is wrong as opposed to Calixtas and Alcees behaviour of taking advantage that their partners are far and that they have an opportune moment to include in a passionate affair. Marriage, love and sex are treated as sacred and private, and no third party should be allowed in. the belief is against the behaviour of Calixtar and Alcee, who engages in a shameful act that does not protect their image, privacy and ego (De &Vanessa 65).
Opposing View that Marriage, Sex and Love are Closely Related
There is serious disapproval that love, sex, and marriage have often been related closely. For instance, the belief that those who engage in romantic sexual relationships love and end up marrying each other is not true (Edger & Kailla 162). For instance, two people can marry each other for other reasons, but they don’t love each other deep inside. For instance, a girl can marry a rich boyfriend for the financial security but not love. On the other hand, a man can marry a less educated girlfriend for a submissive wife, not a woman they love. The passionate affair between Calixtas and Alcee during the storm shows that two people who don’t love each other can still marry each other. Calixtas marriage to Bobinot is seen as a casual one and without any affection and love. Calixtas does not love Bobinot when the storm starts and does not care about his safety (Edger & Kailla 164). The simple fact that the two have a child, Bibi shows that Bobinot and Calixtas have a child proves that they had an intimate relationship that led to the child’s birth. Besides, her extramarital affair with Alcee further shows that Calixtas does not respect her marriage. Marriage, love, and sex are not related because you can marry someone you don’t love and have children with them.
On the other hand, Alcee is happier after the sexual affair with Calixtas and is not interested in his wife, Clarisse. With the happy ending after the extramarital affair between Alcee and Calixta, sex is not treated as sin because it results in happiness for their families and spouses in return (Peplau et al. 86). The extramarital affairs further result in both Calixta and Alcee being strongly devoted to their partners. In the end, Calixta and Alcee express care and love towards their families. After Alcees love affair with Calixta, he went home to write a love letter to his wife Clarisse, telling her to relax wherever she was and not to struggle coming back home but can stay longer since his sexual desires had already been met he was happy. With this in mind, the statement clearly illustrates why marriage is not closely related to sex and love. Also, Calixta is shown a highly devoted wife to his husband but had no interest in conjugal needs that Alcee, fortunately, met during the storm (Peplau et al. 87). The statement further disapproves of the relationship between married people in love and having sexual affairs to show attachment to one another. Despite Calixta and Alcee attending to their sexual and personal desires during the storm and being married to different partners, love is separate from sex and marriage. For instance, both married couples in the storm do not respect their marriage vows engage in extramarital affairs to satisfy their desires from individuals who are not their spouses showing their little commitment and respect to the marriage institution and thus giving a conclusion that married couples are not tied together with love and sex because they are viewed as separate (Peplau et al. 88).
