Book Reflection- A Man’s Search for Meaning
A man’s search for meaning is about the one common thing that every person in the world is always searching to get. He relates the life in the camp to the reality of the people imprisoned by their limitation of mind. The central theme in the book is about survival; the narration centre’s on how everything else lost meaning for the prisoners apart from zeal to survive. (Frankl 24). Such things like sexual urges faded even though it was only manifested in the desire of the prisoner to see another day. Frankl dispels the common misconception that to find meaning in life; one has to be successful. He notes that this is the path many take-ups. They are chasing success all their lives and ending up realizing with a great sense of loss that success did not bring the intended result.
Frankl explains that meaning in life is achievable in three ways. The first is finding meaning in work in love and suffering. He also emphasizes that suffering in itself is useless and meaningless. However, the reason or rather what you become after suffering is what is essential. While at the camp, Frankl describes the people with their different characters and the different roles in the centre. He first points out that their two types of prisoners that step in the gates of Auschwitz; The weaklings and the strong. Separated to the left or right by the officer who leisurely determines their existence or nonexistence of the prisoner. (Frankl 21). The prisoner is supposed to either move to the left or right. The weaklings move in the same direction, and a few hours march their way to the gas chambers or crematoriums where their lives come to sudden death. Frankl distinguishes the other type of prisoners called Cabos, who are the most ruthless of the lot. They are selected to do the work of beating or any other cruel activity to the other prisoners, far worse than the SS men.
Frankl portrays excellent interpersonal skill, which we can say helped him stay safe for the three years in the concentration camp. The way he tells his story in the centre is less about him and more about others. Even when he describes himself and his beating, he does not seem to wallow in self-pity. F This brings out his personality of being self-assured and not overthinking his situation. At one point, the foreman confronts Frankl and threatens to kill him and even questions Frankl what he used to before ( Frankl 31). Frankl’s response and communication skill bring out his personality of not accepting to be dominated against even in mind. It also shows the high interpersonal skill that a person in his position as a prisoner would not have attempted. We would expect a person to become fearful and less pleasant when they become dominated or oppressed in life. He also interacts well with one of the Cabo by listening to his marital hues and offering him his expert advice that Cabo was liking him and doing Frankl favours here and there that end up prolonging Frankl’s life camp.
Frankl shows a level of being detached from reality based on his narrative. He narrated the story as a spectator and came in once in a while to show he was there. Adopted a coping mechanism to dissociate from injustices at the camp and liberate his mind from the anxiety and fear of possible death. This is also how he was able to achieve a sense of peace within himself. Frankl took a lot of pride in his work as a psychiatric doctor. It first gave him a sense of purpose and meaning while still at the camp, and it also impacted his beliefs and values. He shows excellent enlighten in his knowledge and how he applies that knowledge in his life and the influence on other people. Frankl is not the strongest person in the camp based on the narrative, but he exudes confidence and energy above the majority. He is determined to live, but he is intelligent, and any attempts to jeopardize his relationship with the seniors are well calculated.
Frankl found meaning in life through his work as a psychiatrist; he was also determined to live to complete the manuscript of his career. Logotherapy was taken away from him in the camp. A manuscript that talks about psychotherapy to find meaning in life (Frankl 89). The love of his wife and the hope and desire to see his wife give him meaning to live. Through the suffering, he experiences at the camp (Frankl 100). Frankl determines to use it to influence the people and liberate them from the prison and the pain of living a life based on nothing.
