A Sampled Early to Mid-Development Paper

This paper will study the patient called Tony. It explores why he has problems that he encountered in his family and the relation associated with the developmental stages. Tony is 20 years old. Tony is a half to Adrienne, Ben, and Justin. He is the oldest of the rest of the family. According to the provided information, Tony is currently suffering from drug and substance abuse. He is also going through the emotional and social developmental stages. The paper captures the four developmental stages that people go through: emotional, physical, spiritual, and cognitive stages in life. The case study will focus on Tony’s life and how significant actions reflect on the inhibited current developmental stage that he is experiencing. Further, it addresses how concrete solutions can be obtained to lessen the occurrences of the problem.

According to García-Moriyón (2019), the physical developmental stage refers to a state where humans learn about the strengths and functions of their bodies. It is in this stage where humans pick up on exceptional motor skills despite the size, small or large. The primary examples of the physical developmental stage could be muscles, the senses, and, more preferably, the brain. There are several crucial terms and concepts associated with this stage. However, the main one is the cephalocaudal pattern, where growth is evident among infants as they undergo physical development. Categorically, among this group of people, it is also associated with the stage in which the top parts, such as the eyes and brain, grow and develop. Additionally, the stage also shares the proximodistal pattern, in which the growth begins at the body’s center before it moves outwards. It is often associated with varied physical changes such as significant loss of body weight after few days, particularly among the young.

The emotional and social developmental stage is associated with the learning of own emotions. In this stage, children begin to understand their emotions and their feelings. It allows one to deal with concepts that are morally right and wrong and the difference between happiness and sadness (Turiel, 2019). Skinner’s operant conditioning theory is the best theory that relates to the subject, especially where one is sad to believe that punishments and rewards that one gets shape development. The best example is when one is typically happy because of the positive ad best experiences that they have gone through while growing. In Tony’s life, the theory can relate well to an instance of drug addiction. Skinner, in his theory, holds that certain conditions make people feel good, thus portrays the feelings that Tony has after taking drugs. Tony sees a positive reward after taking medications; he feels better. Furthermore, the failure of his parents in a marriage that causes him to perceive life as not necessary relates to theory. It is from this perception that he indulges in drug abuse, a result of Badura’s theory, which holds that whatever one sees will reflect who one becomes in the future as a person.

The cognitive-developmental stage shows the developments that one goes through in their self-morals and thoughts, at different places, particularly in decision-making skills developments. Vygotsky’s theory relates to the cognitive-developmental stage. It states that social interactions and culture play a significant role in cognitive development. Vygotsky argues that people around us determine our developments across all spectrums, such as intellectual growth. The next theory associated with cognitive development is the information processing theory. It emphasizes how people take in information (García-Moriyón, 2019). The two theories relate to Tony’s life; for instance, the people around him might have influenced his world’s perception, as portrayed earlier. The failure of his father’s marriage is believed to cause behavior change, as seen in Vygotsky’s theory. Similarly, concerning the information processing theory, it is worth noting that the nature of his life is a result of his parent’s problems.

The spiritual and emotional developmental stage is associated with learning and developing associations and relationships with others among children, like the use of mannerism. The outcome is either negative or positive. Kohlberg’s theory best explains this stage. It holds that peers often have more significant influences on moral development than their parents. Further, Piaget’s theory also reveals in her cognitive theory that the judgments made by a child are based on the consequences. This is evident in Tony’s case and life, where he acts violently because of the lack of consequences worth being considered for such actions. Similarly, Tony does not also care about all his activities because of having a failed marriage and multiple parents that reflects the emotions that he has towards life. Thus, his friends can easily negatively influence him into drug and substances abuse.

To sum, the case study explored in the paper is on Tony’s life. It captures his situation about experiencing substance abuse and living-at-home problems. His parents contributed to his change of behavior as portrayed in the different developmental stages discussed. For instance, because of multiple parents and a failed marriage, he saw no value in life. Furthermore, theories such as Piaget’s cognitive and information development theory portray Tony’s characters.
